It's all about elevation

August 10, 2024

Colorado is high. The Canadian Rockies, sweltering in heat waves, are low, at a more Northern latitude. Most valleys in the central part of the Colorado Rockies exceed 8,000' in elevation. Most of the peaks in the Canadian Rockies do not exceed 8,000'. the valleys in the Canadian Rockies are as low as 3'000, and swelter in Summers impacted by global warming. The farther Northern latitudes of Canada do not protect it from ever increasing heat wave events. So far, Colorado has been spared by 100 degree heat waves in the mountains. If and when a 14,000' peak in Colorado experiences temperatures at the summit exceeding 80 degrees, we will know we are in real trouble; Denver could reach 120 degrees...We are not there - yet. We may get there if present patterns persist. Imagine 130 degrees in Los Angeles compared to only 120 degrees in Denver, and a mild 80 degrees at the summit of a 14er...Global warming is increasing faster than all our vain attempts to stop it; delayed reactions from human caused reactions in the atmosphere from 20 or more years ago are only now appearing. There will be pressure to build settlements higher in the Colorado Rockies - with thankfully, a big impediment - public land. Colorado is fortunate to be high; the rest of the country can sweat...
